Question: Interest groups play a significant role in shaping Texas politics and policy-making. As you all know, the Texas Legislature meets biannually (every other year) in an odd numbered year. So, the Texas Legislature last met in 2023 and will meet again in 2025.
In your own words, and according to Chapter 10, what is the difference between an interest group and a social movement? Provide examples where helpful.
See section "Types of Interest Groups" from chapter 10. Pick one interest group type and explain what it is they push/advocate for. Provide an example of interest group in this area.
For example, professional associations is a type of interest group and they advocate for laws favorable to their members. An example is the Texas Nurses Association who push for laws that are helpful for nurses in the medical industry.
In what ways do interest groups influence laws and policy? Provide at least two ways.
Hint: See section "How Interest Groups and Social Movements Influence Policy" in Chapter 10. For example, lobbying is one of these ways.
Check out Laws Passed by Texas Legislature 2023. Pick one bill/law that captures your attention. Explain simply what the bill is/does. Do you agree with this bill? Why or why not?
Going with the bill you chose, can you provide an example of an interest group that might be for or against this bill? Why or why not? If you cannot find a specific interest group tied to this bill you can explain what type of interest group might be for or against.
