Cell Cycle and Cancer Lab

Cancer is a disease characterized by uncontrolled cell growth and loss of control over the cell cycle and mitosis. This lab shows 20 normal cells and 20 cancerous cells in various stages of mitosis and the cell cycle for 3 types of tissues, so that the differences between normal and cancerous cells can be investigated.

Part 1 - Cell Cycle Materials

Normal lung tissue Cancerous lung tissue

Normal stomach tissue Cancerous stomach tissue Normal ovary tissue Cancerous ovary tissue

Procedure
1. Write down a hypothesis about what differences you expect between normal cells and cancerous cells. DO THIS BEFORE YOU BEGIN! (Record it in the Question section below the data chart).

2. Click on the link for the virtual lab: (This link won't work with Internet Explorer browser). You might have to click on "Allow" Adobe Flash.
3. Click on the TV to watch the video about the cell cycle.

4. Click on the microscope. The first tissue will be the Normal Lung tissue.

5. Review the stages of mitosis. Click and drag the label to the corresponding cell under the microscope. Check to see if your answers are correct. Correct any that are incorrect.

6. Labels will appear under all 20 cells on the slide. Count the cells in each stage of mitosis and record in your data chart.

7. Click and hold on the "Tissue Slide" box and choose your next tissue sample.

8. Label and count the stages of mitosis for the next sample and record in your data chart.

9. When you have done this for all 6 different tissue samples, calculate your % of Cells Dividing and % of Cells Resting (out of 20 total cells) and record in your data chart.

Questions - Part 1

1. What was your hypothesis about normal versus cancerous cells?

2. Based on your data and observations, what are some of the differences between normal cells and cancer cells? Was your hypothesis correct? What is your conclusion?

3. When studying cell division in tissue samples, scientists often calculate a mitotic index, which is the ratio of dividing cells to the total number of cells in the sample. Which type of tissue would have a higher mitotic index, normal tissue or cancerous tissue? Explain.

4. Different types of normal tissues in the human body have different mitotic indices. From the tissues you looked at, which normal tissue would have the highest mitotic index?

Part 2 - Assessing Your Own Cancer Risk Procedure

1. Click on this link to access a quiz about your risk level for certain types of cancers:

You can skip the "Start Here" and just click on the 3 types of cancer below that.

2. Choose 3 different types of cancer and find out what your risk level is for them.

Questions - Part 2

1. What cancers did you assess your risk for?

2. What were your risk levels for those cancers?

3. Are there any lifestyle changes you could make to lower your risk levels for these cancers?

4. What are some good things about your lifestyle or family history that lower your risk for cancer?
