Reflection on Gender Films
Thoughtfully and creatively respond to one or more of the following prompts. Responses should be at least four hundred or more in total.
Question 1. What was your emotional reaction to the films? Of the three films -- Killing Us Softly 4; Tough Guise 2; and Growing Up Transgender -- which one do you think impacted you the most? Why?
Question 2. In Killing Us Softly, Dr. Kilbourne examined the pervasive effect of advertising on our ideas of gender, sexuality, and beauty. Although she mostly discussed traditional print and TV advertising, what role do you think social media will play in this process? Is social media as liberating as its creators promised?
Question 3. In Growing Up Transgender, we learned about the struggles that children and their parents face in navigating changing norms around gender and identity. What challenged or surprised you about this film? To what extent had you considered these issues previously?
Question 4. In Tough Guise 2, Dr. Katz argued that it is America's definition of masculinity that underlies our often violent and competitive culture. Do you agree with his assessment? Why or why not?
