Problem: The morning of his big job interview, a 20-year old male wakes-up feeling localized pain under his chin. He has not shaved for two days. When he looks in the mirror, he notices a raised red pustule and his jaw line is tender to the touch and slightly swollen. Although, he knows he is not supposed to, he squeezes the skin around the pustule as forcefully as possible; a mixture of pus and blood seeps from the lesion, followed by a small, thickened whisker, which he removes with some clean tweezers. He cleans the popped lesion and dabs a bit of antibiotic ointment on the wound. Although he feels some lingering pain, within 18-24 hours all signs and symptoms have cleared up.
