Go to the St. Louis Federal Reserve Web site, at www.stlouisfed.org, and go to "Research & Data" and then "Economic Data-FRED®." Find "Reserves and Monetary Base." Select "Monetary Base" and then the "Board of Governors Monetary Base" (not adjusted for changes in reserve requirements).

Graph both the total monetary base and the rate of change of the monetary base for the years 1959 to 2010. Also answer the following questions:

a. What was the trend from 1959 to 2008?

b. What happened to the monetary base total numbers from 2008 to 2010?

c. On the rate of change graph, what years saw the most volatility in the monetary base?
