Problem: Based on the readings (Adam Hochschild: King Leopold's Ghost) from this course, do you believe that there is a connection between the imperialism (both old and new) of the Europeans and the present poverty, oppression, and conflicts in former colonial territories? If you're comparing former colonies you need to take into consideration the differences between them. Who were the colonized? How were the colonized viewed and treated by the colonizer? What was the purpose of the colony (exploitation, settlement, etc.)? The formation, implementation, and experiences of colonialism varied greatly. And don't uncritically accept Holchschild's assessment that the Congo is partly responsible for its current situation because "the abysmal position of women and all of the violence, repression, and prejudices that go with that." Is this really the source of the current violence, as horrible as the treatment of women is? Is it possible that this is part of the legacy of colonization itself?
