A football player tests his vertical jump by jumping straight up a distance of 47.9 inches. What was the player's initial velocity in meters per second?

I know that a = -9.8m/s^2 and x2 = 1.22m, but I don't understand where to start with this? I would have thought vi = 0 because initially he is standing on the ground? but that answer is incorrect. Can someone please help me understand what to do?
