The Product:
Collaborate to make a film that reflects the theme of the course:
The Process:
Part A:
Assume a role in the production; all group members should be credited as Producers in the final product so collaboration will be essential. Be mindful to take in all ideas and opinions, although, ultimately, you must still make a film.
Each student in the group must assume at least one of the following filmmaking roles (you may assume more as needed):
Screenwriter/Story Design
Director
Cinematographer/Camera Operator
Editor
Sound Design/Editing
Set Design/Decorator
It should be noted that individually you should take responsibility for the role you select, but you will be collaborating together to craft the film as a whole and some group members should be part of that process.
Part B:
As part of your preparation for your own filmmaking experience, you must find a "mentor" in your chosen role (if you are assuming more than one role, choose one of them) and, as part of the submission process, answer written submission in which you consider the following questions:
- Describe your mentor artist's work in detail.
- What role are they working in? What is their main subject matter?
- Name and explain the use of two elements of film that are important in their work. Make specific references to their work in your answer. Include images when appropriate. Include images/video if/when appropriate.
- What ideas are they exploring, or what purpose does their work serve?
2. Explain what you took from the work of your mentor artist (what inspired you), and explain how you included it in your own artwork in an original way. You should strive to avoid merely 'copying' their style, but their influence should be apparent.
Part B must be done as part of the pre-production process and must be submitted 2 weeks in advance of the due date for the completed film.
Part C:
Reflection:
In either video or written form, reflect on the process of making the film by addressing any of the following prompts and/or your own concerns. Bear in mind that the expectation is that you are only discussing your role in the filmmaking and not those of your group members in any way shape or form.
- What was the most challenging aspect of your role in the film?
- What was the biggest obstacle to making the film and how was it conquered?
- What suggestions would you make to future film students about collaboration?
- Given the opportunity, what aspect of your role in the film would you have done differently to improve the overall quality of the completed work?
- What intentional aspect of your mentor filmmaker's work do we see in your film? (mandatory)
