Paul Johnson uses the life of daredevil Sam Patch to explain the social and economic changes of the Market revolution and early industrialization in America. Johnson writes "Sam Patch...was an angry and not particularly admirable victim of the huge social process that was creating places like Pawtucket and Paterson and granting money and respect to people like Timothy Crane" (435). What was the Market Revolution, and how does Sam Patch's life reflect this social process?
