Overview

History is the story of the past through the interpretation of sources as we have seen already. This makes history a very robust and sometimes controversial discipline as every scholar has a slightly different (or maybe majorly different) interpretation of the sources. This discussion focuses on one of those controversial moments and asks you, the learner, to examine one event through fresh eyes with a look toward your interpretation of primary sources.

Instructions

You will select either the French Revolution or the Haitian Revolution. Using at least two primary sources, from two different perspectives (you will find several sources on the M3 Additional Resources page) answer the following questions:

For French Revolution:

Was life in France, and in Europe, better when gripped by the uncertainty of the French Revolution or under the authoritarianism of Napoleon?
Haitian Revolution:

What was the global reaction to the Revolution? Were the ideals of the revolution lost or supported with the policies of the Revolutionary leadership of Toussaint Louverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines.

Both Choices: Why? Explain your selection using evidence from your primary sources. Explain how more than one interpretation of the primary sources is possible.
