In order to complete this you must first have read the information in the text from both that was highlighted in the summary as well as the previous segment, "Messengers and Messages."

You have learned about two belief systems (Christianity and Buddhism) - far removed from each other in space and time, yet also linked by specific features which they share. One important feature is that of a sacred space: a location/structure set apart for a religious purpose. Not intended to be filled with everyday activities, both the basilica and the stupa were designed, constructed and embellished in ways that demonstrated and emphasized the beliefs and values foundational to the religions.

The founders of these two belief systems, Jesus and the Buddha, had similar ideas about what was important in both this life and what happened after this one ended. Yet when you read about their own commentary, neither one of them mentioned the need for a specific building erected for the purpose of understanding spiritual teachings. Your task in this assignment is to consider how and why the structures known as the basilica and the stupa came to be set apart as sacred space.

Using examples from the readings in the text and materials in this module concerning chapters 8 & 9, you are to respond to each of these questions:

What was the function of 1) the stupa and 2) the basilica? Cite one example from course materials for each of these buildings to support your thoughts.

How did the decorations of both the basilica and the stupa illustrate the religious foundations of each of the belief systems? Again, cite at least one example from the materials to help explain your response.

Finally, do you feel a Buddhist visitor would understand the appearance and decorations of the basilica? If so, why? If not, why not? Would a Christian understand the appearance and decorations of the stupa? Again, if so, why and if not, why not?
