Problem
Search for news articles that prove examples of leaders of major governments or institutions that were caught trying to deceive their people or abuse their powers.
You must have 1 article from ONE of these categories from the past 5 years:
1) the United States government
2) the government of any foreign country
3) the leaders of a major business corporation
Step I:
A. Seek out the news articles or stories that explain each of your three events. Simple searches combining keywords like "government," "cooperation," "caught lying," "crimes," "cover-ups," "abuse of power" etc. yield useful results.
B. Print your articles. You must turn them in to get credit for this assignment.
Step II:
For each news article, answer all four of these questions. Your responses need to be well-written and with detail and examples to support your ideas. I WILL NOT ACCEPT bullet lists of ideas or simple one or two sentence responses.
A. Begin by examining your sources. Is this article a credible source? How do you know?
B. How do you know that the source itself is not an attempt to deceive the reader into believing their personal viewpoints?
C. Summarize in detail the instance of deceit and/or abuse.
D. Include in your response where and when it took place and who was primarily responsible (give names if possible).
E. What motive did that government or organization have for perpetrating the lies or abusing their power?
F. For instance, were they deceiving their people to protect them or for personal gain? In other words, why did they do it?
G. What was the eventual outcome? Did the lies, deception, and/or abuse eventually backfire? Where they successful temporarily and only discovered after it was too late to stop? Did it result in a positive outcome, a negative outcome, or a mixture of both? Who was affected in the end?
