In October 1908, just prior to the launch of his Model T, Henry Ford proclaimed, "I will build a motor car for the great multitude." During the next 19 years, Ford built 15 million vehicles of this model. The success of the Model T was made possible through Ford's development of the moving assembly line, where thousands of workers assembled the cars under harsh conditions. Unskilled labor was cheap. Workers initially received $2.30 for a 9-hour shift. Given the rough conditions at the factory, absenteeism was a major problem.
