Answer the following:

Question 1. The art historians Zucker and Harris examine how sculptors view and represent the human body over time. They begin with the Doryphoros of Polykleitos. What was the aim of Polykleitos?

Question 2. Zucker and Harris look at the jamb statues on the Chartres Cathedral in France during the Medieval period. How has sculpture changed? What did the sculptors of the Medieval period concentrate on? Why did they chose to focus on spirit over body? What was the difference in their goals as compared to the ancient Greeks and Romans?

Question 3. Coming full circle Zucker and Harris examine Donatello's David from the early Renaissance. Did he reject Medieval values or go back to the values of Greco-Roman art? Why? How does the philosophy of Humanism and the values of the Renaissance inform his work?

Question 4. Finally Zucker and Harris look at a modern sculpture from 1956 by Giacometti. Clearly this sculpture has rejected the forms of the past even though the sculptor had historical perspective and many examples of prior sculpture to inspire him.

Question 5. How does representing the body transition from Ancient Greece to the modern period and transform how we see and represent the body? Avoid a generalized response to this question--think deeply and conclude with a strong opinion.
