WRITE DOWN A LIST OF POSSIBLE QUESTIONS - there is a space to write down the questions on pages 2-3
-- SO YOU HAVE A BASIC GUIDE, FOR STARTERS. BUT YOU CAN DEVIATE OR ADD TO THESE
QUESTIONS BASED ON HOW THE INTERVIEW IS GOING. (See worksheet at the end of this assignment sheet where you can pre-plan your questions.)
Remember to include demographic questions as your first questions (to get background information and to establish rapport with your interviewee)
STEP THREE
A. Start by getting consent
B. CONDUCT THE INTERVIEW LASTING APPROXIMATELY 25-40 MINUTES
C. Start your interview by asking basic demographic questions
Here are basic demographic questions to ask"
1. Age
2. Gender
3. Race
4. Ethnicity
5. Where were you born?
6. Where did you grow up?
7. What did or do your parents do?
8. Do you have any siblings? If yes, their ages
9. Marital status
10. Do you have any children? If yes, their ages and gender
11. How far did you go in school?
12. If you're in college or graduated from college, what ws your major?
13. Are you currently working>
14. If yes, what is your job?
Then you can launch into the questions related to the interview, such as "Have you been a victim of a crime?" or "do you know anyone who has been the victim of a crime?" or "In your job as a police officer (or lawyer, crime victim advocate, prosecutor, EMT) please describe your encounters with victims. What training did you receive to deal with victims?"
D. Note non-verbal as well as verbal responses. (Preferably record the interview but if that's not allowed or feasible, take down VERBATIM word-for-word notes)
STEP FOUR
Transcribe the interview or type up your notes. Proofread and correct any typos or punctuation errors.
STEP FIVE
Now that you've transcribed the interview, and read through it, write your NARRATIVE/OVERVIEW. It will cover who you interviewed and why you chose him/her, what you learned that was surprising or interesting, supporting it with excerpted quotes from the interview, followed by the theory that you are applying to the interview, and why.
Once you determine what you will do for your field work assignment, pick one theory from the victimology theories listed below that you will discuss as it relates to what you learned from your field work assignment.
1. Victim precipitation (Dr. Marvin Wolfgang)
2. Victim-precipitated rape victims (Menachem Amir)
3. Lifestyle Routine Activity Theory (RAT) (Cohen and Felson)
4. Deviant place theory
5. Lifestyle exposure theory (Hindelang, Gottfredson, and Garofalo)
6. Rape trauma syndrome
7. Battered woman syndrome
8. Von Hentig's 13 category typology
9. Mendelsohn's Six Victim Types
10. Stefan Schafer's victim typology
QUESTION 2 (after you answer the question about the victimology/criminology theory that best relates to your interview) answer this question with one or two quotes:
What was most surprising or interesting about the interview? Support that with one or two direct quotes from your interview.
STEP SIX
Write up your interview including the overview and the appendix with the verbatim transcript. Put in page numbers.
Make sure you edit and proofread your case study/fieldwork/interview before submitting it. Correct typos or spelling errors. (But you can keep the quotes VERBATIM - word for word).
STEP SEVEN
Submit your fieldwork assignment electronically by the deadline
Due between Sunday November 19th and Monday November 27th at 11:59 PM EST
It is 25% of your grade so please give this your best effort.
Submit through Assignments in Blackboard. (If you have any trouble submitting that way, send it via e- mail to your professor's e-mail address.)
Advise your interviewee that this is a confidential and anonymous interview for a college course assignment. Ask if you have permission to record the interview. If you do, have your interviewee restate that permission at the beginning of your recording. If you do not, take verbatim notes during the interview.
Even though you will want to ask additional questions based on what your interviewee shares with you, use the space below to write down the questions you might want to ask:
How will you record the interview?
notes
record on tape recorder, smartphone, or tablet
combination of these two methods
videotape with camera and/or smartphone
will the interview be conducted by e-mail, phone, online videoconferencing platform, like Zoom ,or in person?
