Chilean Democracy and Dictatorship

The 1960s and 1970s represented a volatile period in Chilean politics, and were reflective of various political movements throughout Latin America at the time. During the early 1970s, President Allende upheld the right to a free press and freedom of assembly despite acts of sabotage, violence, and strikes carried out against him with the aim of destabilizing the country.

Why did Allende take this stand? What historical factors informed his decisions? Although we now have the privilege of hindsight, should Allende have moved more aggressively to prohibit the forces surrounding Pinochet?

In order to answer these questions, please address the following themes: What was the Cold War and how did it influence Chile's politics? Who was Augusto Pinochet? Why did he oppose Allende? Discuss his relationship with the United States.
