Question

Thousands of Jews attempted to leave Nazi Germany for the United States, but restrictive U.S. immigration laws erected bureaucratic "paper walls" and thus prevented many from entering the country. The promise of America as a safe haven from oppression ("Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free") took a major hit in the 1930s and 1940s. Is this history of beleaguered Jews trying to escape Hitler a factor for you when you look at the ongoing contemporary immigration debate? Few Jews entered the country illegally, but should more have tried? If they were caught, should they have been deported back to Germany? What was the anti-immigration argument back then? What are the arguments being made today and how are they different or similar?
