  1. What values of r and λ would you expect to observe when a population is declining, stable, and increasing? Provide an explanation for what demographic parameters are creating each of these situations using the BIDE model and provide graphs from your Excel work that show each of these conditions.
  2. The maximum growth rate a given species exhibits is called 'biotic potential' and symbolized as rmax. Are there species that have rmax less than 0? Why or why not? Explain based on your current understanding of population ecology.
  3. Which of the assumptions of the density-independent BIDE model do you think is the most problematic in modeling wildlife populations? Explain your answer using examples that illustrate violations of this assumption.
  4. In your Excel sheet you calculated several estimates using Chapman's modification of the Lincoln-Petersen estimator. Based on your work using this spreadsheet, answer the following:
    1. Is it important to have a high number of captures in the first capture occasion, or a high number of recaptures on the second occasion, to get an accurate population estimate? Support your answer using results from your simulations.
    2. If you were a wildlife biologist monitoring the population trend of a species, do you think the level of precision of the estimates provided (as measured by the width of the confidence interval) would be useful to you? Explain why or why not using examples from your simulations.
  5. Of the four assumptions of the Lincoln-Petersen Estimator, which one do you think is the most challenging for biologists to deal with? Explain why you believe this, and provide an example of a field technique or protocol that would help make sure this assumption isn't violated.
