Assignment: 1. Theory of Mind Assignment (15 points maximum for each assignment)
a. The goal of this assignment is to improve your knowledge-base of a group of people different from you that you may encounter in correctional counseling settings.
b. Improved knowledge may and likely will result in improved working relationships/ rapport which is the goal of this paper.
c. This paper must be 3 pages single space or 5 pages double-spaced in length.
d. Note: more points will be awarded if you do a literature research ANDinterview a person from this different group.
e. You will need to cite your sources of information - research/ journal article -either in the text or in bibliography.
f. You must identify 2 ways this group of people is different from you. A different group is defined by gender, age, generation, sexual orientation or preference, attitude/ value or belief system, race, socioeconomic status, education/ intellect, criminal history, mental health or other difference as approvedby professor.
g. You mustconvey in writing that you are attempting to improve your understanding of the differences with respect and without negative judgment or personal bias. You will lose points for any inferences or direct negative judgement of this other group or if you fail to identify and address key points listed below. You mustaddress the following issues in this paper:
i. How do you perceive this group orhow does this group perceive themselves to be different from you?
ii. How does this group perceive the world in a different way comparedto you?
iii. What are the significant historical events/experiences(name at least 2) in their existence and how did this change them?
iv. What values (name at least 3) are important to this group and why?
v. How does this group experience and express emotions differently?
vi. How are their interpersonal/ intimate and family relationships different?
vii. How do their emotional experience and values lead to certain behaviors?
viii. How does this group respond to "rule violations" withintheir group (i.e. their "in group")?
ix. How does this group respond to "rule violations" outside their group (i.e. their "out group")?
x. How do you think this has changed your beliefs about this group?
