Questions:
1. What effects of engagement with pop culture (particularly on social media) on youth does the film suggest or imply? Why does it matter, according to the film and your personal views?
2. What evidence do the filmmakers present to argue youth engagement with social media serves the interests of those with power? In other words, who benefits most from the media system? How/why?
3. What values are embedded in (social) media? For example, what do media suggest to audiences/users about:
- what it means to be happy, empowered, and fulfilled
- the means to achieve those goals and the barriers and opportunities in achieving them
- social identities (e.g. class, gender, race, sexual orientation) etc.
Note: These are just examples to get you thinking about values. This question shouldn't be answered as a bulleted list that simply lists a value for each of the examples I listed.
4. What shared understandings of (a) themselves and (b) their social world are constructed and/or reinforced through engaging with social media?
Consider how they view themselves, their relationships with others, social practices and social norms, etc.
5. What role does the funding model of (social) media play in all of the above?
6. Other thoughts about the film or things that surprised you?
