Assignment:

Specifically focusing on the UK based Prisons for young offender's institute for long-term sentenced males who have been convicted of serious offences and are aged between 17 and 21. The inmates come from low socio-economic backgrounds, and some were sexually abused as children. A recent inspection of the prison reported that there were high levels of violence and self-harm by the inmates, and it was suggested that a number of the offenders would benefit from receiving therapy.

I am looking for peer-reviewed papers as evidence that these challenges exist, preferably some papers with statistics evidence on the benefits of therapy. Are there other countries that take a successful therapeutic approach that could be recommended? Focus should be MALES, AGE 17-21, from low socio-economic backgrounds who suffered from sexual abuse.

  • The benefits and also any drawbacks and potential challenges that may be associated with offering therapy in a forensic setting
  • What types of therapy might be appropriate to offer, including why it might be beneficial and drawbacks associated
  • Why young offenders may not respond to therapy, how to help those who self-harm or hold suicidal ideation or intent, and how to deal with victims of sexual abuse.
  • General suggestions and recommendations for all of the above
