Questions: Discuss your perception of how the media has utilized scientific research. Use a specific example to make your point. For example, you can choose to discuss the pandemic, gun regulation or reproductive rights. This paper is about your opinions and your perceptions-there is no wrong answer. Social science research is created not only with the purpose of contributing new information to other researchers but also to provide information to people in our communities-people who are affected by the very things we are studying. The purpose of this assignment is to have you think about how others perceive scientific research and if or why it matters what their perceptions are. The media (news anchors, radio hosts, newspapers, journalists) has played an important role during this pandemic, many times relying on data to make their claims. In your paper make sure to answer the following questions:
What types of research do you think is most commonly being referred to by the media?
• What agencies or institutions are being cited most? (Ex; the Center for Disease Control [CDC}, public health departments, universities or pharmaceutical companies)
• What types of researchers are being referred to as "experts"? (ex; Epidemiologists, infectious disease specialists, healthcare workers, sociologists)
Does the media "stick to the facts"? How much time do they spend discussing the potential meaning of the research findings, rather than just reporting what they found?
Do you think the media plays any role in influencing how we perceive research about the pandemic? Is it positive, negative or a mixture?
Do you think it matters what the media says and how they talk about scientific research?
