Biology Homework Worksheet

Part 1

In the table below, indicate which specimens you chose, the order for each, and indicate which you plan to use to answer questions in Part 2 of this homework.

Your insect choices (provide the letters of the photo sets you chose to identify).

Provide the orderof the insect you chose (where you finish the key = your final answer)

Note here which one of the 2 you used for Part 2 of the homework.  Place an X indicating your choice

Winged:

Wingless:

Part 2

Once you have determined the Order to which your organisms belong, choose one and using internet sources research the following information for that specimen. Record your answers on the provided Unit 2 Homework Worksheet.

(Note: You can refer to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Beaver Fact Sheet as an example of the type of information you need to find. However, please note that you are being asked for additional items in the following list that you won't see on the Georgia fact sheets.)

I. What families are within the order? To which family does your chosen specimen belong?

II. Draw an image of your specimenwith all the critical features labeled which you used in your pathway through the dichotomous key (do not copy and paste something you find - draw it yourself). Refer to the Australian Museum website for an example of how you might properly illustrate your insect. Note the two drawings near the top of the page. Depending on the key features used in the determination of your insect's classification, you may need a couple of drawings (both a top view and a bottom view; or maybe a side view, if that's better) to show everything you used to arrive at your identification.

III. Provide the insect's complete classification, from kingdom all the way down to the family of which your chosen specimen belongs. (Something similar can be found on the Animal Diversity Web website. You don't have to do the extra detail given in the central/main part of the page - the classification in the box on the right side of the page is what you need; and you can stop at family, unless you know more detail and want to go farther.)

IV. The common name of your specimen (For example, the ‘North American beaver' is the common name for Castor canadensis.)

V. Description of physical characteristics (see fact sheets linked above in the section #2 heading for guidance)

VI. Habitat - what types of places do you find your specimen? (see fact sheet examples)

VII. Species range - where in the world are they found? (see fact sheet examples)

VIII. Diet (see fact sheet examples)

IX. Behavior (give a couple basic facts on things like social structure, feeding times, activities during the day, or different times of the year, etc. - whatever you think is unique/interesting about your bug - just 2 or 3 things is fine)

X. Reproduction (see fact sheet examples)

XI. Environmental/ecological role or importance (see fact sheet examples)

XII. Economic importance (if any)

XIII. References (where you got your info, in APA or MLA format)
