Most healthcare workers carry a mobile device daily no matter which department or field they work in. There are a large number of personal mobile devices used in the workplace increasing technological capabilities and misuse. It seems texting patient information or snapping a photo of a patient for both clinical and educational purposes would be no big deal, but it can cause ethical challenges. Just to name a few informed consent, patient autonomy, photographic ownership, and breech of patient confidentiality which complicates security measures and policies set forth by the organization.
With this being said: Smartphones present both opportunities and challenges and have become an essential tool for providers and have significantly improved the quality of medical care. Do you think it is okay for staff to use personal phones for work purposes?
What types of measures can be put into place that set boundaries for making sure employees are utilizing the technology correctly? Think of documents and/or service lines that would manage privacy and security within the healthcare field.
Hint: What can be done from an organizational level?
On the flip side, should patients be able to freely use their smartphones while in-house? What rules and/or polices should be put into place to protect the rights of the employees?
