Question: Can you please comment on what I did well and what I could have done differently in the following response I wrote? Here is the question I had to respond to: Administrative agencies are required to provide public access to their records, through such legal mechanisms as the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). What ethical responsibilities do employees of an administrative agency have with regard to access to information? What types of documents can administrative agencies ethically and legally keep out of the public's reach? Why would some documents be private and others public? Explain. And here is my response: Administrative agency employees have ethical responsibilities when it comes to the public's access to information, especially when it comes to rules like the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). These duties include being open, fair, and honoring the right to privacy. When dealing with the public, agency workers must be honest, fair, and responsible. FOIA requires transparency, but some papers can be kept secret to protect national security, personal privacy, law enforcement interests, trade secrets, internal discussions, and attorney-client privilege. When deciding to keep a paper secret, you have to weigh the public's right to know with the need to protect sensitive information. Keeping to these moral standards ensures openness and protects people's privacy and national security.
