Animal visitation programs are becoming more popular throughout the world and are beneficial for patients in health care facilities. The child life specialists at a local children's hospital are interested in developing an animal visitation program. The administrative staff, however, has many concerns regarding zoonotic disease transmission and infection prevention protocols. It is your job to make recommendations to the hospital.

1. Protocol for the animal visitation program, including infection control guidelines and requirements from animal handlers.

2. What types of animals should be permitted to visit the patients? Name at least 2.

3. What diseases potentially transmitted by these animals are of greatest concern? Briefly describe at least three per animal species mentioned in part 2.

4. How would you prevent disease transmission? What clean-up precautions would you recommend?

5. What areas in the hospital, if any, should animals be restricted from? Are there patients that should not be part of the visitation programs? If so, which patients?
