Question: A patient comes to the hospital with complaints of fainting. While in the room, she codes; however, she is a DNR. No life-saving efforts were initiated due to her DNR status. Within minutes the pt had a spontaneous recovery. Tests were completed to explain the incident. Her spontaneous recovery was due to an implanted device that intervenes in case her heart stops. The patient requested the device removed because she stated she didn't want to be revived again. The device was removed by the surgeon at the patient's request. Keeping with standard care after surgery, the patient was ordered antibiotics.
The patient refused antibiotics stating I want to die. The nurse disagrees with the patient's decision and secretly gives the patient IV antibiotics. Another nurse noticed what the patient's nurse did, and they decided to keep the incident a secret.
