Several rare cases of typhoid fever are diagnosed in a population of high school rowers (competitive boat rowing) in the Midwest of the United States. The epidemiologists are somewhat puzzled by the likely cause of this disease. Typically, this disease is transmitted foodborne or waterborne in developing countries lacking adequate sanitation by a bacteria called Salmonella typhi. These high school rowers are from affluent families. Additionally, not all the rowers have the symptoms or a diagnosis of typhoid fever. Furthermore, only the new rowers (Freshmen team members) have the disease. Judging by some faded crudely drawn graphic sketches still showing on the back of the neck of one of the rowers, some speculate hazing (harassing) may be going on among new members by older team members as some sort of induction ceremony.
