Question: You are coaching a high school sophomore in the high hurdles on a cool, rainy afternoon in early spring. As the young man completes a start and five consecutive high hurdles, he grabs the back of his right leg, just below the buttock, and falls to the ground in obvious pain. You go to his aid immediately, and, on examination, you note that he is extremely tender in the region of the ischial tuberosity (origin of the hamstring muscles). He reports that he felt something tear and heard a pop while crossing the last hurdle, with immediate sharp pain. He has no history of a previous injury to this region. However, he has been complaining of tight hamstrings for the past several weeks. What type of injury may be present? What should be done for first aid?
