Question

1. What does "freedom" mean?

2. Whose freedom?

3, What type of freedom? Economic, political, financial, social, religious, physical autonomy, moral, literal safety?

4. Consider the rhetoric used by the Patriots in the colonial period about being "enslaved" by British policies.

5. Consider the phrase "basis of freedom". How do you define the basis of freedom? (consider the types of freedom in 3. above, and/or think about other forms of freedom).

6. Is there evidence that White colonists might have been less free in one or more of the ways listed above if Blacks and some Indigenous people weren't enslaved? In what ways were White colonists freer as a result of enslaving Blacks and some Indigenous people?

7. There is not "one right answer" to this question, so think in the gray areas. I will be grading you on proving your answer with facts, evidence, and solid arguments.

8. Remember that slavery wasn't really a thing until after the 1660s, and really didn't take hold until after 1700 so focus on the later colonial period.

9. Basically the question is asking if Whites were "freer" because of slavery. Consider the lifestyle of enslavers, the laws restricting slaves' lives, and why/how slavery became such a force in the colonies. Think about the growth of agricultural products, and how unlikely colonies like South Carolina would have produced much of anything without slave labor to make the swampy conditions livable and farmable.

10. Consider colonial slave revolts as a means of contrast to the upcoming rebellion by the colonists against Great Britain.
