A 13-year-old girl with asthma is seeing her health care provider for a checkup before going to summer camp for a week. The camp is located in a wooded area of the mountains in Pennsylvania. She takes inhaled momentasone (Asthmanex) and salmeterol (Serevent) daily and uses levalbuterol (Xopenex) when symptoms of asthma occur. In the past 4 weeks, she has used the levalbuterol only about 4 times each week. Both she and her mother ask whether she can skip the momentasone and salmeterol for the 7 days she is at camp. They are afraid she will be made fun of for being "different" or may be restricted from activities if the counselors view her as "sick."
Discuss one of the following questions:
1. What type of drug is momentasone and how does it help asthma? What type of drug is salmeterol and how does it help asthma? What type of drug is levalbuterol and how does it help asthma?
2. Is skipping the momentasone and salmeterol a reasonable request for the week this girl is at camp? Why or why not? How will you explain the best plan for this girl's asthma management while she is at camp?
