Mental Health Case Study

AL is a 27 year old female who was diagnosed with a major depressive disorder 6 years ago. She had difficulty concentrating, reduced motivation, and anxiety in social situations. She was initially self -medicating with alcohol, and has seen several psychiatrists. AL's psychiatrist has prescribed her several antidepressants including Fluoxetine (Prozac) and Lurasidone (Latuda), and Paroxetine (Paxil) 20mg daily most recently but she has been intermittently compliant. Aripiprazole (Abilify) 2mg daily was added to her Paroxetine (Paxil) 20mg daily. She is here today for follow-up and has questions about the side effects of these medications.

1. What type of antipsychotic is Lurasidone (Latuda), and what labs should be monitored when taking this medication?

2. Paroxetine (Paxil) and Fluoxetine (Prozac) are antidepressants. How can you assess if these medications are working? What are some of the adverse effects you need to warn the patient about?

3. What is a major benefit of Paroxetine (Paxil) over Venlafaxine (Effexor)?

4. Would you change the patient to Valproate (Depakote) and why or why not?
