Talk to at least ONE employer/human resource personnel about what impresses them when they are interviewing a prospective employee. You may not interview yourself. Do not just write answers to questions, but synthesize and think about the whole of the information.
Decide on the employer/human resource personnel. You can interview someone at your own place of work. Or pick an employer at the type of business that you think you might like. You will get more out of this assignment if you pick an employer in a career area that you might want to enter.
Suggested questions: (You may use others and not all of these. Some of these are repetitive, but you have to be sensitive when you are asking questions and follow the flow from the employer’s previous answer.)
1. Name
2. Company
3. Experience in personnel, hiring, etc.
4. What is the one most important trait that impresses you when you are interviewing a potential employee?
5. What personal qualifications do you look for?
6. What makes the most positive impression on you during an interview?
7. What educational qualities do you look for?
8. How does GPA rank with work experience or leadership opportunities when it comes to hiring?
9. Does a potential employee need to be involved in campus student/professional organizations or in community activities?
10. What actions should be avoided during an interview?
11. What "turns you off" during an interview?
12. What type of follow-up should the applicant do after the interview?
13. What feedback do you provide an applicant as to whether or not they have the position, and strengths and weaknesses?
14. Approximately how long does it take for an applicant to hear from you regarding your decision following the actual interview?
Remember to synthesize your answers into a thoughtfully prepared written document. That means not to just list the questions and answers in order, but to write in paragraph form and tie together the answers and comments.
