Informatics, Analytics and Data Use Subdomain III. H. Information Integrity and Data Quality Section
Perform quality assessment including quality management, data quality, and identification of best practices for health information systems Competencies: Data quality assessment and integrity Assignment Purpose: Become familiar with mandatory state reporting of healthcare data Assignment Description Health Care Facilities track the number of births and deaths each day and send to the state specific reports on the incidence of death and births in their states.
Review the links in this lesson from the State of Missouri that outlines the requirements of documenting and recording what is called a "single live birth" which is used to create the preceding document the birth certificate. Review the Missouri data elements (for either live births or deaths) that are required and discuss the information collected and discuss the challenges with collecting/abstracting accurate information to appropriately document the live birth or to record the death. Review and identify the three most difficult data elements to accurately capture? Discuss why you chose them.
Now imagine you are the birth/death registrar in your facility and you are in charge of collecting and abstracting this information:
What process would you undertake to gather the identified information?
What tools would you use to collect the information?
Why type of data analysis can be performed on the information?
How will the information be reported?
How will you ensure the integrity of the information?
