Jack has been feeling really stressed about school. There is a test in English tomorrow and a big paper due in Social Studies class by the end of the week that Jack has been procrastinating on and hasn't even started writing yet. Jack went over to a friend's house to study for the English test, but was feeling so worried about the paper it was hard to focus. Jack's friend said, "Hey, I've got some pills that can help with that. They help you stay awake and think better. I use them once in a while and they really work. What have you got to lose?" Jack decided to take the pills, and they seemed to make a difference, so Jack also took a few to use later in the week for writing the paper.

CASE STUDY 2:

Franki's parents have said many times that they don't want Franki to smoke, even though they still do. Franki doesn't think much about smoking during the school year, because none of their friends smoke, smoking isn't allowed in most public places, and their parents try not to smoke in the house. But in the summers, Franki's family usually goes to visit relatives in Europe, and it seems as if everyone over there smokes, everywhere-even in restaurants. Franki's cousins who are around their age smoke and they always tease Franki about it. Franki's thinking that maybe they'll try smoking this summer, since Franki will be surrounded by so much smoke anyway. Franki figures they can always quit when they get back to the States.
