Question 1. Firstly, just describe your first reaction to the story and/or any questions you still have about it.
For example, you could just say why you did or didn't like the story. You might share how it speaks to something you've experienced in your life. You might quote some lines that stood out to you.
Many of the stories we read this semester can be confusing, so there's no shame in asking for clarification, too.
Question 2. A literary symbol is a person, action, or thing in a story that takes on extra meaning, to the point that the thing represents an idea. The quilts, in this story, are arguably a symbol of something. And when Mama gives the quilts to Maggie, you probably can tell the act is symbolic.
For 2., answer these questions: What do you think the quilts come to symbolize in this story? What does it mean symbolically when Mama returns the quilts to Maggie? What clues lead you to figure all this out? (Perhaps you will have to show what Maggie and Dee each symbolize, too!)
Question 3. What theme do you think this story is arguing for? That is, what do you think the story wants us to think?
