Question: To perpetuate is to cause something to continue. Teachers who have been in the field of education for a while, may often feel that the pendulum in the world of education is swinging back and forth all the time. Education will start with this, change to that, then return to this with a touch of that. As an educator, it is impossible to stand still. Borrachero et al (2019) discuss that the ongoing need to improve the quality of teaching and learning mainly entails teachers adapting their professional skills so as to be able to teach in the different educational posts they may occupy. We have a group of students and their parents that change every year and curriculum that is constantly being modified. 2001-2002, the pendulum swung to the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Education moved away from integration to a focus on individual academic standards. The pendulum swung again to Every Student Succeeds Act in 2015 replacing No Child Left Behind. ESSA extended more flexibility to States in education and laid out expectations of transparency for parents and for communities. ESSA requires every state to measure performance in reading, math, and science. National Education Association (2020) explains that ESSA will ensure every student has access to a high quality education, regardless of ZIP code, and that strategies to engage families and communities are central to school improvement efforts. As an educator, what the swinging pendulum means to me is that ideas change, curriculum changes, educational materials change and often opinions about what is best for students changes, but the constant is the importance of inspirational teachers, students who have clear goals of what they want for their future and the vision of student success by both.
