Assignment: As we move to the second essay of the semester, this is good time practice zooming into specifics of artistic craft. Throughout the term we have been discussing literary elements, including plot, character, setting, language, image, symbol, and theme. This assignment turns to language. It is perhaps the central element to analyze since literature can be understood as the art of language. (Photography, and, arguably, film, could be described as the art of light.) Select three medium-sized pieces of text to analyze of approximately one-third of a page each from the reading for today. From each of these, choose three keywords or phrases and explain how Johnson's use of language develops the story not only in terms of what the narrator and other characters say but how they say it. With regard to Avery, you can choose passages from her spoken language in quotations or from the narration of her thoughts.
