Case Study: Khanyi is a 21-year-old student who has made an urgent appointment with you. She is very anxious and emotional and begins to cry as she explains what brought her to see you before you can discuss the informed consent. She tells you that you are her last hope at trying to put her life back together and is considering suicide if you are unable to help her after one session. She already has a plan on how to commit suicide. She explains that she has not been performing well in her studies and she is worried that she might not pass this year. She cannot afford to lose her bursary as her family cannot afford her university fees. Khanyi explains that she supports her mother and two younger siblings financially with the little money she earns from her part-time job in the university library. She says that if she does not graduate she will struggle to find work, and that she does not see a future for herself without her degree. The only person she feels understands her is her best friend, Palesa, who is in a similar situation to her. However, Palesa usually obtains distinctions for her modules.
