Assignment #1 - Concept Analysis of KM
This assignment will assess how well you apply the concept analysis technique. You may use the concept analysis framework presented in Chapter 1 and in the Lecture slides for the first lecture.
You may use references (e.g. dictionaries) in order to better understand the term. These should be cited if used. You may refer to the glossary in your text as well as the references provided at the end of Chapter 1.
For KM concept, brainstorm to think of a list of examples. An example should be specific and should illustrate or exemplify the concept of KM. You should have at least 5 in each column.
Next, write a brief paragraph or two describing what the major differences are between the set of examples and the set of non-examples. You may do this for each pair or for the whole set. For ex, throwing away plastic bottles vs. recycling them indicates a difference in attitude - caring vs. not caring about the environment. Some useful criteria to make these distinctions should include: purpose, level of structure, types of people involved, degree of subjectivity, motivation of individuals involved and processes involved.
Try to identify at least 5 distinguishing features between the examples and non-examples. These should be listed in the attributes column as shown below:
Key Attributes
|
Positive Examples

Negative examples
|
1. Caring about the
environment
|
1. Recycling
|
1. Using plastic water
bottles once and then throwing them away

|
|
|
1. Minimizing waste
|
2. Driving an electric car

2. Overconsumption

Example 1 shows corresponding positive and negative examples. Example 2 shows that they need not correspond. Next, make use of all five key attributes to define the KM concept. This should be your definition. Remember - you are being graded on how well you apply the technique not on the quality of your definition. You may (optionally) compare your definition to other sources and highlight the similarities and differences.
Evaluation will be based on
• Completeness - all assignment requirements have been addressed
• Clarity - you clearly explain your approach and your reasoning about the concepts
• You come up with an original definition for the KM concept - that is, one that is in your own words - and one that is clearly consistent with the key attributes you have listed
• Extra marks will be based on how professionally your paper has been presented (e.g. title page, name, headings, proofreading).
• You need not to produce an essay - your work can be in point form, graphical form
- whatever you feel best conveys what you are trying to get across. You may submit in either Arabic or English.
