Question: During the Presidency of Andrew Jackson, the Indian Removal Act of 1830 was narrowly passed by Congress. This Act set aside lands in Indian Territory (modern-day Oklahoma) to where Native Americans in the South (and elsewhere) would be moved. Five major Indian tribes in the South (Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, Seminole) were removed from their ancestral lands to Oklahoma, where the government promised that no white man would bother them. Most Native Americans were against removal and many had tried to assimilate into white society (for example, many Cherokees were slave owners). The Cherokee appealed to the Supreme Court to prevent removal and the Supreme Court agreed that removing the Cherokee was unconstitutional. However, Andrew Jackson sidestepped the wishes of the Supreme Court and removal commenced. This led to the infamous Trail of Tears, during which thousands of Cherokees died on their forced journey from Georgia to Oklahoma.
