Contact the most senior person responsible for training and development at two different organizations and arrange for a brief interview to discuss needs analysis. You will want to ensure you speak to a minimum of one representative from an organizations that does not go through a formal needs analysis process. You will want come away from the interviews with a clear sense of the following:

  • How strategically aligned the training and development function is with the corporate vision, mission and values. 
  • What the barriers to needs analysis are in each organization.
  • What you would recommend to each of the senior leaders you spoke to in order to help him or her overcome these barriers and how you would impress upon them the importance of needs analysis from a strategic perspective.
  • The findings of your environmental scan should be presented as threats and opportunities.
