The definition of art in our book is; "a work of art is the visual expression of an idea, or experience, formed with skill through the use of a medium".
For this assignment, I am asking you to find a piece of art using the definition above. Take a virtual visit to the Guggenheim Museum in NYC. Go to the "Collection Online" section and find a piece of art that you instantly connect with, something that really catches your eye, and address the questions below in a two-paragraph essay. Spend some time connecting with the work - really "see" the art, rather than just looking at it analytically - let it stir up some feelings!
* A paragraph should consist of six to seven sentences. It should include a topic sentence, several supporting sentences, and possibly a concluding sentence.
• What initially grabbed your attention?
This could be color, subject matter, or formal elements, like shape or line, and describe the composition of the artwork using some of the vocabulary you learned in Ch. 1 such as; representational, figurative, abstract, etc. What is the medium of the piece - is it oil, acrylic, photography, etc.? You could say something like, "the bright colors of this oil painting with its strong square shapes initially grabbed my attention, and the abstract figure of the woman reminded me of an African mask. "
• What feelings do you feel when viewing this art?
• Consider "expression of an idea or experience" - what does this mean to you? Sometimes with art we don't know what the idea or experience of the artist was (context), but we still can connect to the artwork because of our own expression or experience. In art, remember that you, as the viewer are half of the equation.
• After you read about the artist and why they created this piece, include what you learned about the artwork. Does the title of this piece give you any clue to what the artist is trying to communicate? Did your feelings or opinion change after learning more about the piece? Why or why not?
