Suppose that in an apparatus it is necessary to maintain precisely the cross section of a 20mm circular nickel steel bar. If this bar is heated to 200 deg Celcius, what tensile force should be applied to the bar to maintain its cross sectional dimension? What should be the applied axial force if the rod were made of aluminum? Assume for stainless steel that E=200GPa, and alpha=11.7 x 10^-6 per deg Celcius and for 6061-T4 aluminum E=70Gpa and alpha=23.4 x 10^-6 per deg Celcius.
