Narrative of Solomon Northrup (1853) and Narrative of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, Written by Himself (1845) are two slave narratives. One details the capture of Solomon Northrup, a Black man who was born free and was enslaved as an adult. The other is about Douglass, who was born into slavery and escaped as an adult. Northup collaborated with a white professional author, David Wilson to tell this story, which was published in 1853. In 2013, it was transformed into a film by director Steve McQueen, and won multiple awards. It was most notably recognized as the first film directed by a Black filmmaker to win an Academy Award. Lupita Nyong'o also won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Both slave narratives explain, in great detail, how slavery impacts them and the other people who were enslaved. Create a video or a written response to the following questions: What tactics did Solomon Northrup and Frederick Douglass use to survive slavery? How did they attempt to escape?
