Circulation in a human fetus is very different from normal circulation. Oxygen diffuses from the mother's circulatory system into that of the fetus through the placenta. The movement of blood through the baby's heart is highly modified: blood flows from the right atrium through an opening in the septum to the left atrium and then to the left ventricle.

A) Explain why you think this happens?

B) Explain what would happen if the opening in the septum did not close before birth. Be sure to explain how blood and its flow would be affected as well as what symptoms the babies might experience.
