Assignment:
You will interview someone about their work/life balance.
You will need to identify a person who meets the following qualifications:
A person with caretaking responsibilities (their own kids, foster kids, caregiving for elderly family members, primary responsibilities for child/adult).
A person with a job that is at least part time and a history of outside-of-home work.
Ideally, someone who is different from you (either generationally, gender, ethnicity, or family roles) would be the most useful.
You will decide on the questions, but below are some areas you may choose to focus on:
- What social/historical/cultural factors influenced your interviewee's work/career and family goals and expectations?
- What structural/legal or social regulations shape the career and family choices your interviewee made?
- What barriers or successes did or have they had in obtaining a career, establishing and supporting their family or meeting their work/life goals?
- What policies/programs or activities have they used or would they like to see in place to help them with work/life balance?
- In what ways have covid, economic ups and downs, or other historical or social events changed or shaped their work/life experiences?
You will turn in a transcript, but not an audio or video recording of this interview. You should record it, so that you can transcribe it later.
You should prepare with about 10 questions, but please note that the questions may not all get asked - interviews can go in strange places so don't hold yourself to the questions if you are getting interesting stories!
Upload a word document with a transcription of your interview here. Transcribing your interview means typing out your questions and the answers you received to each question. An interview transcript is a written record of a completed oral interview. For this assignment, you should plan on an interview that lasts at least 30 minutes.
