Reflection on Group Problem Solving
Purpose: The following exercise helps students to think about their experiences in groups, about the group's functioning and about their individual roles and contributions to the group. Importantly, it also helps students to identify how the group might function more effectively next time. Using the prompts from the instructions below, students are to reflect individually to form generalized principles based on their experience, to inform their future actions.
Instructions: Using theoretical frameworks and your notes created throughout relevant Learning Activities each week reflect and report on group processes using examples of problems encountered while working as part of a group and how you approached a resolution to these problems using the following headings:
Introduction: Discuss the purpose of this reflective report and the role of groups
Group Formation: Discuss how the group was formed, and how you got to know each other and establish group dynamic?
Organization of Work & Group Processes: What roles did you adopt within your group? How were group meetings organized? What strategies were employed to allocate tasks and divide the workload?
Understanding and Managing Group Processes: What effective group participation criterion makes group collaboration effective? How did you improve the effectiveness of your group? What challenges and issues did you experience as a group and how where they resolved? What process did you use to research, write, and develop the group report from first draft to final submission?
Evaluation of the Group Processes: What were your strengths and weaknesses as a group? What were your personal strengths and weaknesses as a member of the group? Give one specific example of something you learned from the group that you probably wouldn't have learned from working alone. Give one specific example of something the other group members learned from you that they probably wouldn't have learned otherwise.
Recommendations/Solutions: How would you personally do things differently if you were to work with the same group? What skills and working methods will you develop to deal with future group tasks? How has this experience helped you to understand the role of teamwork and groups inthe workplace?
