Billy McFarland and the Instagram influencer-promoted an exclusive, luxury festival marketed toward rich millennials. The festival was doomed from the beginning due to poor planning, inadequate experience, and suspect financing. However, the combination of publicity, narcissistic attitude, overconfidence, and sold tickets created a momentum that made it impossible for Billy and those around him to tell the truth, which was: "This concert is not going to happen."
