Problem: Envisioning My Life's Purpose
Journal prompts provide an opportunity for self-discovery and critical analysis of your own habits and ways to enhance them. For each Journal entry, delve deeper into your thoughts to create a meaningful and reflective response.
Prompt: Use divergent thinking to brainstorm goals. Candy Chang, an artist and community activist, lived near an abandoned house in New Orleans. She got permission to turn one side of this house into a giant chalkboard and stenciled it with these words printed in big letters: Before I die, I want to . . . Anyone who passed by this house could pick up a piece of chalk and complete the sentence in their own way. Some of the answers were:
1) Before I die, I want to sing for millions.
2) Before I die, I want to plant a tree.
3) Before I die, I want to live off the grid.
4) Before I die, I want to be completely myself.
This Journal Entry invites you to walk by that old house in your imagination and add your contribution. The purpose is not to dwell on death. Instead, it is to think creatively about how you want to be and what you want to do during the rest of your life. To do this, you'll draw on your skills in divergent thinking, which refers to opening up options and possibilities. Remember that this is an exercise in pure creativity. For best results, do not stop to censor or edit any of your ideas. Elaborate on your main idea. Why is this one of your goals? What steps do you want to take to achieve this goal? Is your goal reasonable or just a dream? These are just ideas to help you get started. You can use them or any ideas of your own when you elaborate on your goal.
I discovered that before I die, I want to . . .
